 IRO Organization for Community Development

Mission and Focus: IRO is a non-partisan, non-profit organization. It was officially registered as a non-profit in June 2019 with the Department of NGOs in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, in accordance with Law No. 1, 2011, under Code No. 4925L. IRO primarily focuses on community development through capacity building, awareness raising, and advocacy programs.

IRO members have been involved in community activism since 2004. The organization emerged from a community-based youth forum in the Garmyan district, where members were active from 2005 to 2013 through a program funded by the National Endowment for Democracy (NED). This eight-year project played a pivotal role in establishing the foundation for the organization's activities.

IRO vision is a society in which the vulnerable groups have share in decision making process and access to community resources
Our Mission
IRO mission is to motivate and enable people to participate in the processes of decision making and sustainable development for improving their living standards and basic human rights. IRO works in close collaboration with several networks and organizations. We believe that networking with like-minded organizations is very essential and helpful for the materialization of IRO’s vision, mission and goals.

We undertake capacity development initiatives with various target groups, especially youth, women and girls,  IDPs, refugees, and disabilities and leading them to improvement in their lives and fundamental rights.
We create spaces for dialogue that focus on social justice, vulnerabilities, livelihoods, food security, health and their implications especially for marginalized communities and facilitate the voice of these groups to be considered for policy action.
We endeavor to explore and undertake pilot initiatives through inclusive resilience-building programs to find proper solutions for the sustainable and socially cohesive community.

Our Approach

Community-Centric Approach and Diverse Collaboration: A Model for Sustainable Impact

IRO organization operates on a unique working methodology that prioritizes community engagement and collaboration. Comprising a dynamic team of both staff and volunteers, including individuals from refugee, internally displaced persons (IDP), and host community backgrounds, we have established a framework that leverages collective expertise and local insights to address pressing challenges. This document outlines our approach to program implementation, fundraising, and stakeholder engagement, highlighting the pivotal role of diverse perspectives in driving meaningful change.

Team Composition: Our team is predominantly composed of individuals aged 18 to 30, with some members even younger in specific districts. The diversity of our team reflects the communities we serve, ensuring that our efforts align with the needs and aspirations of local populations. While most team members bring fresh perspectives and energy, our leadership benefits from experience of the Head of the organization with over 25 years of dedicated work in civic activism. This blend of youthfulness and expertise fosters innovation while grounding our initiatives in practical wisdom.

Methodology: At the core of our methodology lies a commitment to inclusivity and participatory decision-making. When identifying needs, addressing gaps, and tackling challenges within communities, we convene gatherings where community members, stakeholders from government, private sector, community leaders, experts, and other relevant entities collectively brainstorm and strategize. These sessions serve as platforms for open dialogue, enabling the pooling of diverse insights and resources. By involving a wide array of perspectives, we ensure that our interventions are comprehensive, contextually relevant, and sustainable.
